This Ain't Your Mama's Chapstick

Chapstick True ShimmerGrowing up, my grandmother always kept a tube or two of chapstick in her pocketbook. I can still remember the waxy feeling and slightly medicinal smell when she would drag it across my lips.

Chapstick’s come a long way since then. Even since the days of Suzy Chapstick (remember her?). With soft, moisturizing formulas that glide on silky smooth, they leave your lips equally so. No more “drag,” no more strange pharmaceutical smells.

This season’s latest addition to the Chapstick family, Chapstick True Shimmer provides the moisturizing benefits you’ve come to expect from a good lip balm, plus it adds shimmering highlights and a burst of mouthwatering scent and flavor. Beautiful on it’s own, True Shimmer also looks (and smells) perfectly marvelous layered over your favorite lipstick.

Currently available in Botanical Berry and Tropical scents, Chapstick True Shimmer will add Peppermint Rush and Fruit Sherbet in July. I’ve been lucky enough to sample these new scent-flavors, and I just have to say I’m kind of addicted to the Fruit Sherbet. It reminds me of my favorite childhood fizzy soft drink, Tiki Punch. Plus, even in the high desert climate of Santa Fe, my lips are soft and smooth. At $2.79, it’s the bargain of the summer.

Hey, healthy looking lips are more noticeable and more beautiful, and what girl doesn’t want a subtle shimmer? So, maybe it’s time to add a subtle highlight and luscious flavor to yours.

Face up to it. FACE Atelier's got the goods.

I know. I know. I’ve been absent for a little while. So sorry, but springtime in Santa Fe has kept me outside. Plus work has been a bit of a grind. Okay, enough excuses. Let’s move on.

My absence has given me ample time to try out some new goodies from one of my favorite under-the-radar cosmetics companies,  FACE Atelier. If you aren’t familiar with this Canadian-based brand, they’re all about unscented, cruelty-free products that are “a carefully edited collection of versatile, sophisticated makeup and tools that simply work. And work simply.” And they’re devoutly against animal testing. Love that. I’ve actually been a fan for years.

Recently I tried out some new eyeshadow colors, mascara, a few lipsticks and TOUT, FACE’s lip plumper.

FACE Atelier Eyeshadow and Sculpt MascaraThe eyeshadows are lovely if not a touch powdery. Pigment rich in interesting, eye-color enhancing shades that are long-lasting and crease-free for the most part — the subtly shimmery colors are my favorite but they crease a little bit, although nothing a little lid primer can’t handle.

Sculpt mascara is one of my favorite all-time mascaras. One or two coats and you have the perfect lash enhancement for daytime. A few more coats and lashes become luscious, long, fat (and phat). Gorgeous. And little to no clumps.

My favorite things about Sculpt mascara are that it does not flake…ever, it’s virtually waterproof, and with Vitamins C and E it’s actually good for your lashes. Moreover, even with its maximum staying power, this mascara is a breeze to remove. Just water and your facial cleanser…voila. Beautiful.FACE Atelier Lipsticks and POUT Lip Enhancer

On the other hand, when I first tried FACE’s lipsticks, I wasn’t overly impressed. They’re fine. Not particularly long-lasting. But the colors were just okay, perhaps a little “off.” As I was determined to like them, I started experimented with layering, and then I realized the true beauty of these gems. Another fun thing about the lipsticks: the color intensifies with additional coats. These are like adding odd little accessories to your wardrobe — at first you’re not quite sure how you’re going to wear them, but then you try a little something here and and a little something there, and you realize you’ve just expanded your wardrobe into a full-fledged collection with a few, small unique touches. Cool.

Finally, there’s POUT, what FACE appropriately calls a lip enhancer. First off, the container –and the liquid inside — looks more like nail polish than lip goo. But, brushed onto your lips before or after lipstick, or on its own, and with its bright pepperminty-ness, Pout tingles pleasantly and plumps your lips a little. The greatest secret Pout touts is that it contains a healthy, exclusive peptide complex that will indeed plump your lips (quite nicely, in fact) with repeated and regular use.

Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good

CARGO’s new lipstick, PlantLove Botanical Lipstick, is lovely in so many ways.

First of all, the lipstick itself is this really amazing, high-quality lipstick with an emollient-rich, smooth lip balm built in. Rarely do you find a such a nice, treatment-based lipstick with pigment this dense, but the masters at CARGO managed to pull it off. The finish is low-luster, almost-matte but with amazing softness and conditioning. And guess what else? No mineral oil or petroleum-based goo. Just natural butters and plant-based oils to soothe, smooth and beautify your smile.

Next, the packaging–well, it’s sorta corny. CARGO PlantLove touts a lipstick tube made completely out of corn (but don’t eat it)! And the box is crafted of something called ‘flower paper’–you can actually unfold the box, plant it, water it and wild flowers will grow…from the box. I can’t get over how cool this is!

Last, the heart of it all. CARGO is donating $2 from the sale of every shade of PlantLove to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Center. Wow. Not only is CARGO committing to taking care of our lips, they are also helping the environment…and sowing the seeds of love for our planet’s children’s future. Amazing. Who knew that one lipstick could do so much? CARGO, that’s who!

Rough Week…Holy Merde

I’ve been AWOL from GirlPaint this week due to several late-night events (I’m an event planner in my “real life”), plus I got no sleep and as a result, a big zit on my cheek popped up and won’t go away…NOTHING in my skincare regimen is working.

However, some fabulous cosmetics came to my rescue. My saving graces this week in no particular order (like my life…no particular order) are:

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Warm BeigeBobbi Brown Creamy Concealer I dug out my Bobbi Brown concealer to see if any aid and/or comfort could be found inside it’s shiny black confines. And, oh yes. I had actually forgotten how well this almost-sticky full-but-natural-coverage concealer really conceals. I owe my job (and my self-esteem) to Bobbi this week. Bless you, Bobbi, bless you.

Next up…NARS Blush Cheek Color in Penny Lane goes on so perfectly. Soft, subtle color. And so smooth…like a baptism for my cheeks. You’d never guess my complexion was a wreck. Really…no, really. And thank you, St. Francois.

My third savior in the week’s Holy Trinity cosmetics is Paula Dorf Lipsicle Degas. Paula Dorf’s Lipsicles are that perfect blend of lipstick and lipgloss–long-lasting, subtle color with that just-right touch of shine. Not too gloppy (is that a word?) or slick. And Degas is that perfect shade, the color of your lips only better…a sandy mauve-pink. Paula, you are a goddess.

This week was all about giving praise to the gods and goddesses of makeup. Let’s all genuflect, confess and give thanks. Amen.

Get Fresh Spa “Look Better Naked” Gift Set

When I first saw this 3-piece kit-in-a-lidded-blue-cylinder entitled “Look Better Naked“, I was sorta insulted. But then I got over myself, remembered that I love everything from Get Fresh Spa, and tried it out. First of all, the lavender-lemongrass scent is incredible…very clean, both relaxing and uplifting. The first step in the three-step system is the “Body Souffle'” which is actually a whipped body scrub. So luxurious and delicious. And it makes my skin feel silky soft. The next step is the “Soy Body Facial” which you apply from your neck down and either leave on dry for 10 minutes or get into a warm tub and soak for 15 minutes. I prefer to soak, but I’ve tried both methods and my skin looks terrifically improved either way. The “facial” contains soy extract and mineral clay which work together to smooth your skin and detoxify your body. Plus, it doubles as a body wash! The last step in this magical threesome is the “Body Butter.” With that amazing lavender-lemongrass scent, the rich, emollient formula softens and moisturizes without being overly heavy or greasy. It also makes your skin feel tighter and smoother. Wow, I DO look better…naked!

Paula Dorf Broadway Baby Quickie

Paula Dorf, the talented makeup artist to such amazing women as Barbra Steisand, Diane Keaton and Mary Tyler Moore, challenges women to “become your own makeup artist,” once again released her annual Quickie. For 2005, she entitled it Broadway Baby. Too cute, huh? This incredible little quickie, my favorite so far, contains four each of Paula’s best selling eye shadows and lip colors. For eyes, you get a beautiful plum and violet palette including Spellbound–a fabulous deep plum that is perfect for lining or blending for a smokey look, Daydream–an icy violet that goes on a little deeper than it looks making it perfect for a crease color, Tranquility–a few shades lighter than Daydream, Tranquility is a great base shade or blending shade, Firedance–this shimmery white actually goes on with a hint of gold…a perfect highlighter. Lip colors include two of Paula’s conditioning lip creme colors: Sky Pink and Vanity; it also contains two lip sheers (perfect for layering or wearing alone for a natural glossy look), Smooch and Pretty. The colors are very flexible, taking you from day to night. I have created a very clean look with the Broadway Baby pallete, as well as a very dramatic, smokey look. Plus the quickie compact has a mirror and is about the size of a credit card, so it travels easily in your smallest purse or pocket. You can apply the colors with your pinkie or with a travel brush set…and become your own makeup artist!

Review: Trucco Sheer Lipstick in Stained

Trucco’s Stained Sheer Lipstick looks scary at first glance. I thought it to be almost black when twisted it up from it’s handsome, logo-imprinted black tube. Wow! What color could this possibly be? I hestitantly rubbed the end of the glossy, black formula on the back of my hand, and….what’s this? It’s a lovely, clear chocolate-y brown shiny sheer! Now I’m thinking, “Okay, it looks great on the back of my hand, but what about my lips?” Well, as it turns out, Stained looks fabulous. One of my new favorite shades, definitely. Since my first, somewhat harrowing, experience with Trucco’s Stained, I have used this beautiful shade on several of my clients and it’s looks absolutely amazing on everyone I’ve tried it on, from the darkest skinned lovelies to the fairest, blondest beauties–by the way, it’s truly the most beautiful with Asian coloring.

Stained is such a natural shade and it seems to transform into the “perfect shade” on every lip it touches…and I mean perfect. I’m a professional makeup artist and I just happen to sell many of the cosmetics I use (how convenient, eh?). So far, every one I’ve tried this on (including myself) has purchased this lipstick shade…more than once. And at a very reasonable $13.95, why not give it a try yourself? You won’t be sorry. Trucco is available at fine salons and online at
